ART

without art everything would be real,
exact.
with art many things are really,

reality is what is.
art is what is wanted.

Art is not just a mirror,
a reflection, with inflection,
an opposite, an exaggeration,
a distortion that creates pleasing effects,
even if it causes madness,
especially when it's divine.

Passion makes some nervous,
especially in the flesh.
as a death defying act,
its absence foretells succumbing.
when suddenly, slowly, methodically,
so nonviolently in its disguise,
its aggression is misjudged
and taken as a sign
of being a natural progression.
even so, one need not take it
as a choice
nor deny it to others.

To lose one's enthusiasm for life is certainly
a harbinger of death. In some opinions, passion
of the flesh (as in lust) is a private matter.

I'm of a passionate vent, except to commend the marvelous work of art and the link to info. on one of my heroes, Joseph Campbell. I never knew he was inspired by Buffalo Bill's show. I think I caught all of the Moyers, I think it was, interviews with him before he died. He was a spiritual after my own heart.

Campbell distinguishes seventeen stages in mankind's various myths and legends:
(interesting to note what is listed first, perhaps a nod to Buffalo Bill)
the Call To Adventure, the Refusal of the Call, the Helper, Crossing the Threshold, the Belly of the Whale, the Road of Trials, the Goddess, the Temptress, Atonement with the Father, Apotheosis, the Boon, Refusal of the Return, the Flight, Rescue from Without, The Return Threshold, Master of two Worlds, and Freedom to Live.

Also, the progression of the stages flow chronologically from one into the next and all are rather self-explanatory except for Apotheosis, unless you are familiar with the word (I wasn't). Etymology: Late Latin, from Greek apotheōsis, from apotheoun to deify, from apo- + theos god sometimes called quintessence, the fifth and highest element that permeates all nature and is the substance composing the celestial bodies.
I recently read that 'vitalism' is making a comeback to join with physicochemical forces to help understand the processes of life and where emotion becomes Soul's most direct expression. So, as we cloth passion with language, privacy is dressed for public display and celebration.

It is ashamed that Campbell is not around. I'd love to know what myths he feels are in realignment. The nation seems divided down the middle regarding its myths. I've always felt it is important for any system to have a strong mythical foundation on which to build the greater myth. Actually Communism had a stronger myth quality than today's Russia can rely on. I think there's a bit of an identity crisis there, ergo the acting out, not that we haven't done everything in our power to undermine their age old paranoia, justified I might add. We certainly have pursued an interesting foreign policy in the last decade considering our mythology???

Only those teachers with a passion for their subject influenced my life and I'll always be grateful to them for the enthusiasm they showed. Passion well used is a great asset I think.
