I am the Head of the Data Library at the University of Alberta and the Academic Director of the Research Data Centre. I have spent the past 25 years of my career providing research data services at my University. I began as a statistical consultant in an academic computing centre and while data analysis remains an interest, I found myself championing the stewardship of data when few people had the same interest. I was very fortunate to turn my affinity for data into a career at a leading Canadian research university. In the past fifteen years, I have been actively involved with the Data Liberation Initiative (DLI) in Canada to provide affordable and equitable access to Statistics Canada data. This has led at movement of establishing data services in libraries in post-secondary institutions. There are now 75 members institutions in DLI. I have also been active in establishing a training programme that holds four regional workshops across Canada annually to provide continuing education and skills development around data services.
