I studied chemistry at Utrecht University, with a specialization in small molecule crystallography. I did my PhD in the same group on structure-activity relationships of sweet tasting compounds; this was mainly molecular modelling work.

After my PhD I worked for 4 years as postdoc at EMBL in Heidelberg on protein structure validation under Gert Vriend.

Back in The Netherlands I moved to industry. I worked for 4 years writing application software for a new laboratory instrument, and then for 8 years as a manager of the R&D group.

I started work for NBIC in September 2009, and when NBIC finished in December 2013, I spent two years at the Netherlands eScience Center as the DTL programme manager Life Science Data. Starting January 2016, I am manager ELIXIR NL at the Dutch Techcenter for Life Sciences.
